Organized by Stedelijk Museum, De Stijl: The Real, Virtual & Imaginary is a fictional exhibition aiming to construct and convey the philosophical retrospection of De Stijl. By adopting the form of a catalog, this book introduces the timeline and development of De Stijl, as well as key work from principal artists of the time.
It was my intention to create a very clear and well-structured image of Neoplasticism’s body of work in order to generate calm and a tight focus between my viewers and the work I choose to present. Hence, the goal/challenge is to capture the sophisticated De Stijl aesthetic through typographic and a systematically-led visual system.
Inspired by the utopian ideals and unique visual language of De Stijl, the justified paragraphs and pure geometric structure are functional in the design and expressive in the content, showcasing the relationship of form and functionality.
Breaking down the idea of the book, I envision it being a container of curated De Stijl design work that will bring out the whole essence of what The Style is as it connects to the variable aesthetics of the system without competing with it.
